I've always wanted to tattoo my kids names in a band style around my ankle with small hearts to decorate it. My hubby is waffling about it because he thinks it is bad luck but it is not like I'm tattooing his name which would be silly. I love my children and their names are special and unique to me, and their last name wont change until the girls get married. And even if I left the last name off I think it would be pretty. I already have a carousel horse on the small of my back with my name arching over it, and I don't want to be repetitive. What do you think? What should I do or say to help my hubby and I decide what to do?

Answer
I think it is a bad idea.

I ask men I see with lady's names tattooed (in locker rooms, grocery store check-out lines, etc.) if they married her. 80% say no. By that standard, as soon as you get it, Anabelle Marie (who you call Annabelle) will decide to go by Marie. Worse things could happen; death or divorce, God forbid.

People will suggest that if you drink less you will be able to remember your kids' names without having to read your ankle. People are cruel. More than one fellow I know has made jokes about women with their name tattooed on the small of their backs. They say it is so whoever they are dating that week can read it while he is in an intimate position, and know what to call her in the morning. Cruel, cruel, cruel.

("Intimate position" is a polite way to say "Doggy-style sex", a phrase which a gentleman like me would never use.)

If you have another child you'll have to use the other ankle or put the name somewhere else.

Keep the names in your heart, not on your ankle.

I am not opposed to tattoos. I have one - only one. It is a tribal design I got from the Ibans in Borneo when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer. It commemorates a journey of 16,000 miles and two years of service to my country. I remember my children well enough without having their names tattooed on me, even after a bottle of old vine Zinfandel.

Ideas for a tattoo please!?

My mom and I are thinking about getting matching tattoos. It will be my 4th and her 2nd. We both LOVE to travel, we go on cruises mostly, and I kind of wanted something that represents this. I was thinking about maybe getting a flip flop or something, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Answer
The flip flop idea is cute. I've seen it before online, a mother got it with her kids' names in them. You could get something tropical, like a great flower. Image search engines are great for finding unique tropical flowers. Find a reputable, professional, and talented tattoo artist in your area. They can help you with ideas, and also draw things up (usually at no extra cost) so the tattoo is individual to you and your mother.

I was looking for a tattoo idea to represent my son. After months, (yes, months) of searching, I came up with this: I have a "triple spiral" inspired heart. The "triple spiral" is Celtic in origin and means the 3 stages of womanhood; maiden, mother, crone. The heart's point turns into an Egyptian Ankh, which means "eternal" or "eternal life." I placed a small blue star on the upper left corner of the whole tattoo, which represents my son, and it has his initial inside it. If I have more children, I can add more stars. I also have another "triple spiral" on my right wrist with the word "Strength" under it. To me, it represents how strong, wise, and independent I am as a woman and a mother.

Use image search engines to find pictures of what you're looking for, then bring it to your artist of choice. They can do wonders! Mine drew an entire calf piece for me; it's extremely unique, and exactly what I wanted!

I hope that helps you out!
