i have a small blue lotus flower on my right shoulder thatI'd like to cover with Koi. The lotus is rather plan and kind of feminine and didn't turn out like i expected. I'm not looking to get a sleeve either

Suggest the head of the koi overlay the small blue lotus flower tattoo which you already have so the design faces forward toward your chest, the body curving into a half moon shape. How the eye of the koi is designed will 'toughen' the tattoo image. Also, the long and curling lip barbels on so many koi tattoo designs are an exaggeration which often gives the image a fierce dragon like appearance.

Both men and women have koi tattoo designs done in the natural colorations of gold, tomato red, or orange. The same is true for the all black koi designs. The addition of flowers, leaves, water, and waves can make the design more masculine or feminine. The koi type called Utsuri have a unique coloration which would look good for a tattoo; base color is white, gold, or orange with black markings.
