Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, book?

Q. I watched the movie with Rooney Mara and I loved it. I thought it was amazing. I heard that it's based on a book and there are two books after it too? My question is are the books difficult to read, confusing or hard to follow. Or are they easy to follow and understand? And are they good? I'm a good reader and I usually read difficult books but I'm just wondering.

Answer
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was written by Stieg Larsson and translated to English. They are somewhat difficult to read in that I remember thinking to myself while reading the first book "Not much is happening, but I can't stop reading." So if you can appreciate good writing that does not necessarily have much in the way of action you'll enjoy it. The first half of the book in particular requires that.

The second book "The Girl Who Played with Fire" was a bit more action packed. Good as well, but I did not find it AS good as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The mystery in tGwtDT was just more engrossing.

The third book "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest" was disappointing. Compared to the first two books it was weak. Writing was still good, but the plot, unfortunately, was lacking.

Is "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" any good?

Q. My Mom bought me "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and I've skimmed parts of it just to get a feel and it looks interesting, but I won't actually start reading it unless I read the first one first, didn't know the order until yesterday.

I know it's been getting a lot of hype recently, does it live up to it? I'm 17, so I don't think I'm to young for the content,I know a bit about it.

Answer
I think "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is excellent. It's one of my fave books.

I'm just now reading "The Girl Who Played With Fire"...

...and I wonder if perhaps the translation simply isn't as good as the first book.

"...Tattoo" was probably translated to English from the Swedish by someone different.

Why do I think that?

"...Fire" is more clumsy and includes many details not needed.
"...Tattoo" wasn't like that.

But I continue reading "...Fire" because, like the first book, it's becoming interesting now... Yet only on about page 350. [!]

PS. The probable reason for any sudden 'hype' is a recently released movie of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." Haven't seen it yet, but will.
