Q. I have been wanting to get a tattoo for a long time but wanted one with meaning. My father was just diagnosed with skin cancer. My mother recovered from colon cancer last year and two other family members have died from two other cancers. The tattoo I have decided on would include four different colored ribbons for the four different cancers. I told my parents about it tonight and my mother told me it was a stupid idea and asked why I would be proud of my family members having cancer..I really want the tatto but would it be disrespectful to get it honoring someone who doesn't approve of tattoos?

Answer
It would be disrespectful of you to tattoo someone who doesn't want any tattoos, but it's your body, it is your personal way of honoring a person. I think she's got it all wrong, it's not that you are proud of people getting cancer, you are proud of the strength with which they fight the cancer.

But I understand if she doesn't want a permanent remainder of this fight, she is not only a cancer survivor, she is also a mother, a woman, she's got interests and cancer patients hate it when everything in their life is all about the cancer. She put the cancer behind her, she wants that in her past, not in the forever.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want to tattoo cancer symbols on my body, but that's just me. It's just too permanent, cancer is too much of an issue, and having lost family members to cancer (my mother included), I kind of wanted to find a way around the cancer to mark the event, and I did ;) Is there some other way you could remember them by? For instance, my sister recovered from cancer and she got a tattoo of blossoming flowers, since her fight against cancer gave her a different outlook in life, she is reborn. This is just an example to illustrate what I am trying to say. Think of other things that make these people you mention important in your life.

What symbols represent strength and beauty?

Q. Either one symbol or seperate ones work. I'm really into egyptian symbols like the ankh and eye of horus, but I want the symbol to represent strength and/or beauty. PLEASE NO CHINESE/ASIAN art. I'm not trying to be racist, this will be a tattoo idea and i'm not into chinese art and culture. I'm part Mayan indian so any of those symbols would be greatly appreciated. Hieroglyphics will work, too. ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME. Thanx in advance.

Answer
The nefers symbol in egyptian hieroglyphics means "beauty" but it's not going to be a very attractive tattoo...
As for mayan symbols, I'm sorry, I know little about their symbols. However, there is a symbol of a heron (bak) in mayan symbolisms and herons are both beautiful and strong.
If you're going for a figure tattoo, the tarot card for Strength is a great symbol for both strength and beauty. It's got the image of a lion and a woman. (http://www.sacred-texts.com/tarot/pkt/img/ar08.jpg)
