I'm trying to figure out how does the artist know what kind of tattoo he is going to put on a somoan man. Does the person getting the tattoo pick out what he is going to get.

If you are a novice then ask the artist to design something for you, there are a few different designs you can use when it comes to the Samoan Tattoo:
I. Togitogi (dots) These are normally found in the tattoos on womens hands.

II. Aso (thin cross beam) This is normally used when tattooing a man's back.

III. Fa'avaetuli (like the leg of a golden plover) These are normally used in womens tattoos.

IV. Fa'aanufe (worm-like) Generally used in womens tattoos

V. Fa'alaupaoga (like the leaves of a Pandanus tree)

VI., VII. Aso Fa'avaetuli (like the leg of a golden plover)

VIII., IX. Atualoa Used when tattooing the front of mens legs.

X. Fa'amuli'ali'ao

XI. Fa'a'upega (net-like) Used in men around the groin.

XII. Aso Fa'avaetuli (like the leg of a golden plover)

XIII. Aveau (starfish) Used when tattooing women.

I have been playing with the idea of getting a tattoo for a while. I wanted to get little elephant ears and eyes on my pelvis. NOTHING on my penis. I know this would hurt a lot but I like the idea. The thing is I am pretty sure 4/5ths of all females will think I am a weirdo or a creep. Am I right? Will this repel most women?

A demented female drowned by the thought of social gains. It is all relative to generation. Back in the days, they didn't very much approve of this and probably thought it ridiculous. The joke is, they value individualism, but only on a level that very much separates you from acceptability. They are using your wild carelessness, to widen the barrier of what is to be practiced. No man in his right mind wants to make love to a woman with obscenities permanently marked in a private and sacred place on her body - also with the thought that someone spent time drawing on something he earned... People of this generation are being carried away by the terminology "YOLO" -You Only Live Once. Then you find them coming on this very website asking health questions about their symptoms and illnesses. If you try to change them - you're judgmental. So watch the show, watch them draw on their vaginas. Let them design and color their fruits, let them pierce their eyelids, the inner lips, their tonsils, etc. You can't stop the force of foolishness.
